Akane and Kanai get a story of their own. These characters get a greater story later in the anime. While Ecchan (Ebato) is a friend of Hanabi she plays a bigger role than you might first think she might. Akane and Kanai are in direct contact with each other. These characters also play a big role in Kuzu no Honkai anime less so than Hanabi and Mugi. My favorite this about anime is its ability to draw real emotions from the viewer, from one end of the gambit to the other. This show brought up quite a few emotions as well. The characters have real depth (even if they are shallow) and the art style is gorgeous! All the voice acting was perfect! I loved characters, I hated characters. This show had me binge watching, watching episode after episode. INSTANTLY HOOKED AFTER FIRST EPISODE!! Then it just got better and better! Yes, the love scenes are very steamy and very realistic, but its so much more than that. I typically steer more towards action / fantasy / sci-fi types, but I wanted to see what the hype was about. Let me state, this show is pretty far off from my typical anime genre. Kept hearing whispers of this show, finally decided to check out an episode after catching up on all of the other new shows I was watching. I think anyone with a heart can enjoy this anime for that reason.you can relate. But this was about their journey in High School and what a journey it is.you only live once, live it to the fullest with no regrets. If they make an OVA, then I want to see where these characters end up after 5-10 years to see if I am right. I think that if the story continued then it would show they had other experiences with other relationships but come back together in the end. It was better that they went separate ways for now but I got the sense they understood each others truths in the end and were actually good friends that had deepest affection for each other.
Ultimately, I think this anime completely takes your emotions for a ride while reeling you in with passion these characters feel (and believe me they show passion which was intense in and of itself.) I think that because those two started out with impure intentions, and started to have honest feelings in the middle, made it difficult for them to know if the other was truly in love with them as they are.
Mugi, I think wanted to be with her but knew he needed more time to work things through so he didn't hurt her again. Instead Hanabi realizes she doesn't need to be with someone to understand herself or to move forward however I do think she really loved Mugi and wanted to be with him. Honestly, after the teachers got together, I thought for sure that Mugi and Hanabi would end up together after all they experienced but that is not how it turns out. It looked to be a vindictive narrative but in reality it was more real that these characters spent their whole time trying to understand themselves and each other through their actions and reactions. This anime runs the gambit from an unconventional relationship based on reciprocating feelings from the ones they can't have then travels yuri exploration and people bouncing from one to another in various sexual encounters. I wasn't sure what to expect from this anime since I have ready two volumes of the manga, and the manga seemed desperate and twisted from their attachments, but this anime turned out to be more complex and deep in emotion and experiences than I could have ever imagined.
